Heraldic flag of Prince Adam Wenceslas, Museum of Cieszyn Silesia

Description

It was without a doubt the most difficult box that Beskid has had to make! The heraldic flag of one of the last Piasts, Adam Wenceslaus of Cieszyn, originating from 1605, is the most valuable collection object of the Museum of Cieszyn Silesia. Our task was to carry it safely out of the 18th-century Larisch palace, which serves as the museum's headquarters. The 3.0 x 1.7m flag was to be lent out to a museum in Opava. A seemingly trivial task - simply put the flag in a box with a lid and carry it to a lorry waiting outside. However, in order to get through 4 sets of doors and a narrow and low staircase of the palace, it was necessary to make a box in which the banner could be moved vertically.... The banner is made of silk, the Piast coat of arms is painted in gold and oil paints, on both sides! For this reason, the curators and conservators did not agree to the object being wound onto a museum tube. In order to provide such a special box, we worked out a design which was a combination of nine layers of cardboard profiles, cardboard honeycombs, corrugated cardboard, interleaving paper, polyester nonwoven fabric and canvas.
