Box for glass plate negatives
A box with compartments dedicated to the storage of glass plate negatives. In the price list for standard formats, you will find prices for a few variants regarding the most popular formats. The accepted conservation standards do not accept horizontal storage of glass plate negatives, e.g. in clamshell boxes. The only exceptions to this principle are boxes which store the largest-sized negatives, e.g. 24x30 cm, or even larger ones: 30x40 cm, 40x50 cm. You can find examples of boxes for such exceptional objects in the photo gallery.
This construction most often comes in the form of a lidded box (made from 1.0 - 1.3 mm thick Agema or Castello solid board) with an arrangement of inner partitions which are made from thick and rigid museum-quality cardboard (ISO 9706, PAT). In another variety - the so-called "A" type - the partitions are made from the same type of cardboard which has been used to make the outer box.
Please note: When placing an order for the box with compartments for negatives, please remember:
- a compartment and a partition are two different things! A box with 5 compartments (cells) in a row requires 4 partitions. If you order a box with 5 partitions, you will receive a box with 6 compartments with the same dimensions. It is not always clear and may result in a misunderstanding;
- external dimensions (a and b) of boxes with compartments might be much bigger than it might seem after simply adding up the dimensions of the cells. This, however, does not regard the height - in this case the box will only "grow" by a few millimetres;
- provide us with the expected arrangement of the cells. For example, the 8x1 arrangment will be understood as neighbouring cells arranged in one row and adjoining one another with a longer side. An arrangement of two or three rows of cells is hardly ever found when it comes to the storage of glass plate negatives. A box with this type of arrangement will become very heavy after filling it with glass!
- if you do not let us know otherwise, the cells will be symmetrical;
- a cell should not be wider than 25 mm;
- if the storage of collections is limited by the dimensions of shelves, please let us know about it and we will consult the design of the box with you. We will define how many cells of particular dimensions can be arranged in the box so that it does not stick out of the shelf;
- museum-quality cardboard partitions are normally equipped with half-moon-shaped cutouts for fingers. If you do not need them, please make it clear in the order. In the case of "A" type partitions we avoid making the cutouts;
- if you want to make sure that the box design provides the best possible protection for the negatives, order a box with compartments that will accommodate just one plate each;
- the box should be stable. Avoid solutions where the height of the box is clearly larger than one of the sides of the base;
- any plan / layout or even a manual drawing of the box and the arrangement of compartments that you attach or enclose with the order will be extremely useful in the designing process!
